Discover Anthony's Fish Grotto

If you’ve ever driven through La Mesa craving fresh seafood with a side of nostalgia, Anthony's Fish Grotto at 9530 Murray Dr, La Mesa, CA 91942, United States, is the kind of place that instantly feels familiar. I stopped by on a sunny Saturday afternoon after hearing locals rave about their classic fish plates, and within minutes I understood why this longtime seafood restaurant has built such a loyal following.

Walking in, the atmosphere is relaxed and welcoming. It’s not flashy, but that’s part of the charm. Families, retirees, and couples on casual date nights fill the dining room, and the staff greets regulars by name. That sense of community isn’t accidental. Over the years, this La Mesa location has become a neighborhood staple, and many of the online reviews mention the same thing: consistent food and friendly service.

The menu leans heavily into fresh fish and traditional coastal fare. You’ll find crispy fried shrimp, grilled salmon, fish and chips, clam chowder, and seafood platters loaded with scallops and calamari. On my visit, I ordered the grilled halibut plate with rice pilaf and seasonal vegetables. The fish arrived flaky and moist, lightly seasoned to let the natural flavor shine. According to the National Fisheries Institute, seafood consumption in the U.S. has steadily grown as more people look for lean protein options rich in omega-3 fatty acids. Dishes like grilled halibut and salmon here align with those health-conscious trends without sacrificing flavor.

One thing I appreciated was the clear preparation style. When I asked the server about cooking methods, she explained how the kitchen either grills, broils, or fries to order, depending on the dish. That attention to freshness matters. In seafood restaurants, timing is everything. Fish should be cooked just until opaque and tender; overcooking leads to dryness. Here, the execution was spot on.

The clam chowder deserves its own mention. Creamy but not overly thick, it’s packed with tender clams and diced potatoes. I’ve tasted chowders across Southern California, and this one holds its ground. It’s the kind of bowl you’d want on a cool coastal evening. Paired with warm bread, it turns a simple lunch into something comforting and memorable.

What also stands out is portion size. The plates are generous, making it a solid value for the price. In a time when many diners are shrinking portions, this restaurant still serves hearty meals that feel worth it. That balance between quality and quantity is frequently highlighted in customer reviews, especially by families who want dependable dining without surprises.

From a broader industry perspective, seafood restaurants face challenges around sourcing and sustainability. Organizations like the Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Seafood Watch program have increased public awareness about responsible seafood choices. While specific sourcing details may vary and it’s always wise to ask the staff directly for the most up-to-date information, the emphasis on fresh, simply prepared fish suggests a focus on quality ingredients.

Service during my visit was efficient without feeling rushed. Drinks were refilled promptly, and food arrived hot. That smooth coordination between kitchen and floor staff reflects solid management practices. In hospitality, operational consistency is often what separates average diners from trusted neighborhood institutions.

Beyond seafood, the menu also includes options for those who prefer lighter fare or non-seafood items, making it accessible for mixed groups. Salads, sandwiches, and classic sides ensure that even picky eaters find something satisfying. This flexibility adds to its appeal as a go-to dining location in La Mesa.

All in all, this spot blends tradition with reliability. It may not chase modern food trends or experimental plating, but it doesn’t need to. Instead, it focuses on what it does best: serving well-prepared fish, hearty seafood plates, and comforting classics in a relaxed setting. For anyone exploring restaurants in La Mesa or searching for dependable seafood near Murray Drive, this address continues to earn its place on the local dining map.

  • We came for dinner at 6 in winter, so there wasn't any day light left to enjoy the views of the lake (which I've been told are beautiful). The food we ordered was prepared perfectly and had just the right amount per serving. Not stuffed and barely any left overs to take home. I ordered a grilled shrimp, fish and scallop kabob (I do wish I had more than one large scallop, but it was delicious and filling enough). My sister ordered clam chowder in a bread bowl. They ran out of New England style, so she tried the zesty red style, which I tried and we both liked(she finished it!). My cousin ordered a fried catfish, and my husband ordered the fish and chips! Again all devoured. My aunt ordered the trio ceviche, which she did end up taking some home. I hope to come back during the day time to see the lake and feed the ducks! Oh I think the patio is pet friendly (I saw a dog bowl!)

  • Went here for a date night, loved it .sat in the patio which seemed a little bit dark and cold, but the heaters and the beautiful lights in the trees made it romantic. The food was outstanding service was great.

  • I have recently tried Anthony's in La Mesa for lunch and it did not disappoint. Easy to access off the freeway with ample parking. Adding more fish to my diet has been a goal of mine and twice now I have tried the Orange Roughy with seasonal vegetables and mashed potatoes. Delicious and a nice portion of everything! Seating is plentiful and I have been able to secure an inside table with a view of the adjacent lake complete with a nice resident group of ducks and beautiful fountains! They also have a nice patio area which I will try when the weather permits. I look forward to trying more of their fish options on future visits!

  • It was my 1st time eating at Anthony's fish grotto & chose to eat outside. I was seated with little view of the lake so once a closer table became available I asked to be moved & staff cleaned off the other table for my use. Many servers were attentive to find out I'd I'd been helped. The food was delicious & the service was great! I look forward to returning & trying something new on the menu.

  • I’ve been here many times over the years and it’s always great but last night was exceptional. We celebrated a friend’s birthday and it was fantastic from start to finish. I absolutely must give a huge shout out to our server Gina. She is truly an asset to your team- sweet, friendly, attentive, funny- she truly went above and beyond and added to our already stellar evening. Food and drinks were delicious (excellent martinis). We enjoyed calamari, chowder, wedge salads, scallops, linguine and clams and stuffed mushrooms - all delicious. The ambiance and decor is kitschy and fun. Don’t miss out on this gem.

  • This little tucked away restaurant is beautiful! The ambiance was perfect and we were able to look out onto the lake with the twinkling lights surrounding it. We were seated right away on a Friday night, and Becky, our server, was extremely friendly and nice! We had someone with an allergy in our party and she did great to communicate with the kitchen and staff about the allergy and prepare a meal that was safe for that person. We all ordered something differently and everyone enjoyed their meal thoroughly! I had no idea this cute little place was tucked right behind the 8, it feels like you're world's away! I would recommend this restaurant for older children and families, as a date night out, or a girls night out. Definitely want to return here!
